Starlings and Seascapes by Joe Taylor
This is Joe’s second exhibition here and it’s a completely different body of work. Previous images charted protests around England. These pictures come from his lockdown experience.
“In March 2020 when the world literally went quiet, he would go on long walks and started to create images of seascapes when he came across the starling murmuration and became fascinated by the way they dance in the sky then disappearing under the pier at sunset.”
He’s not the only one…many, many Brightonians made sure to watch this mesmerising daily spectacle, nature’s fireworks!
Sadly, due to human activity the numbers of starlings have now massively declined. The Brighton murmuration has dropped from 100,000 in the early 1980’s to just 8200 last winter however not everything is doom and gloom as a petition has been successful in making sure certain areas are not sprayed with herbicide and pesticide which kills the dung beetle a main food source for starlings so all being well, they may make a comeback.”
So, not a record of a protest this time, but still raising awareness of an issue.

New Brew!
Curious Brewery have taken over and whilst currently supplying us with lush lager and intriguing IPA, we shall soon be serving up guest beers too.
Brewed in the South this English lager uses Champagne yeast in the fermentation process so boasts a unique flavour with plenty more versions to try. You know you want to pop in and sample them!

Fresh and wonderful wallpaper from the brains of our favourite designers, Brennan and Burch! The new paper is now brightening up the window booth area of the bar. Nicely showcases Joe Taylor’s new artwork as well as Nalser, the sexy lamp by Dolly Fixtures.

The Rotunda Theatre has once again planted itself rather handily in Regency Square so there’s really no excuse to not go and see a show.
There’s still plenty of performances to choose from, their last jam-packed day is June 4th.

The main festival might end on 28th May but the Brighton Fringe Festival continues until 4th June, get your kicks outside at the Spiegeltent or the super cool Caravanserai while you can! This has proved immensely popular in its inaugural year in Brighton, though many may recognise it, originally from Bestival.

The Peli has two quite different rooms available – one large, one small – both uniquely decorated and streaming daylight from bay windows overlooking Regency Square.
Hire is half day, full day and room only, or with accommodation in any of our 19 unique themed bedrooms (ideal for a team building Away Days!) plus we offer delicious in-house catering from buffet style to banqueting.
Seating can be configured in several ways – cabaret-style round tables suits smaller groups to chat and work together while theatre-style seating or long boardroom-style tables are ideal for presentations and screenings.
Soundway Escape to Pelirocco
So the Soundway Records entourage were down in Brighton last week during the Great Escape along with their signing Pigeon. The band played a lively gig in town and then joined them in our bar afterwards for a Soundway family takeover on the decks afterwards!
Excellent to see female DJs front and centre, ie Norsicaa and Paula Juana, plus Josh moonlighting from playing with Pigeon!
The record sales hit a roaring trade too, not surprising considering the enthusiastic dancing by the stall holder :)
We had a fab night and hope you did too.
